Task 3

Webtoon & Motion Comic

Storyline/ 3 Act Structure

01 Setup

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Mia, who was an ordinary student. Due to the pandemic, she had to do her lessons online at home. She had a cat named -Finn. It was a naughty cat that liked to tease her owner.

02 Conflict

One day, Mia was woken up by Finn when it was only 4 am and Mia was very angry. And just as Mia was going online to class, Finn went back to teasing Mia and interrupting her class, which made Mia very angry, so she decided not to give Finn a treat today. Finn begs Mia to give him treats, but angry Mia won't. Because of that, Finn is also very angry and decides to run away from home and not live with Mia. Because of that too, Finn complains about Mia's all the way.

03 Resolution

This is when Finn suddenly meets two rogue cats on the road. The rogue cats looked at Finn good bully and want to fight with it. Finn didn't give in and fought bravely. After a big battle, the defeated Finn walked sadly on the road. Until finally, Mia, who was worried about finding Finn, appeared at that moment! The two are finally reunited! Finn and Mia walked home together happily.

Visual Research

After setting up the storyline, I began visual research on my character designs and my preferred comic style. Also, since I was unfamiliar with sketching cats in poses, I did some research and observation on designing the cat's postures.

My main inspiration was Benji Nate's comics. I love how he interpreted the story between the main character (Olive) and her cat (Henry) in such a light-hearted and funny way, as well as having the heartwarming ending at the end.

Character Design

Then I started designing the character, creating different expressions for her in order to make the character more vivid and consistent throughout the presentation of the comic. The usage of colour and the head-to-body ratio help to create a charming, lively, and joyful character.

Next is the design of the character Finn's posture, which I hope will be dynamic rather than rigid in this comic. I intend to convey the intensity of the battle scene, in particular, through the diverse physiques, so that the viewer may easily immerse themselves in the storyline.

Reflection

Knowing the comic's theme immediately made me realise that it would not be an easy task as I'm not familiar with the fighting manga/movie genre. When developing a comic, there are many skills and techniques to learn. Body posture, gestures, and facial expressions are essential in character development for delivering a message that goes far beyond words. I struggled with this a lot and discovered that the entire process was more complicated than I had expected. However, I did enjoy the entire process, from plot development to final animation, and I'm glad I was able to do it. It was really satisfying to see my short stories turn into a Webtoon comic. It was truly a challenging yet rewarding process.
